Psalm 57: 5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth. 6 They spread a net for my feet— I was bowed down in distress. They dug a pit in my path— but they have fallen into it themselves. :7 My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music. 8 Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.
I was a senior in High School and my dear friend and debate partner and I had actually won a tournament (so far as I remember, my only victory) and we were walking down the street to my house singing. Probably our school fight song, but singing. We never sang. But that day we did. Something in music digs deeper than the crude cry of the warrior at the end of battle. David has survived the attack of Saul. In our lives, it is not the exalted perfection of the professional musician, but the deep heart of our souls that cries out in notes from deep inside for joy, love, release and even sorrow. Let God be exalted in our music!
