Luke 13:10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity." 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
Why would anyone object? It was at worship! Horrors that someone would be healed in a place and time of worship! Most of the churches in my experience do not open up times of healing regularly. Some do have times of such, but most hold back because we can hide our sins unto repentance (which is generally encouraged), but it is hard to hide a blind eye seeing or a lame limb walking. Those require an act that comes from God that we are not in control of. The leaders of the synagogue were no different than most of our churches that want control of the outward signs. If I repent my lust, it is easy to hide the evidence of my lust even if I sort of say it, but if my lust is revealed to all, then the stain is always with me in the eyes of the congregation. Divorce is no-fault anymore in the USA because we really do not want to actually live with the truth of our failures. Our lack of faith in healing is hid by not trying to seek healing. What if we actually sought forgiveness for real sin and healing for real body issues and gave God credit for both? Would that be too real for our faith? You just can’t do that!
OH, PS, her problem was not physical, but a binding by a “spirit”. You certainly can’t do that either.
