Leviticus 25:10 Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan.
For the record, I have heard that the best bankers are Jewish who follow the teachings of the Bible. If that is true, how does this Jubilee year figure in? My debts and my family owe some family a great deal of something: money, land, crops or animals and yet after 50 years, the entire debt is cancelled! If I could get a bank to loan me $100,000 at the age of 25 and have the debt or what is left of it go away at 75, I would think the bank would not loan the money. Not the Jewish pattern I was once told worked. (I truly have no idea what the Jewish bankers actually did, but that was the sort of rumor I have heard.) What is true is that there is a day of freedom that is offered in the Jewish training that opens the doors for new life, new hope and new opportunities that may have been closed. I am pretty sure they knew how to avoid a total loss of what was owed the “banker” or whatever the debt holder was called. But, the idea of a total forgiveness is clearly in the plans of our Father to whom everything is owed. It may not be practical, but it is sure a great hope for all of us. Lord, send your new Jubilee to us also.
