Matthew 16:18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
First of all note that this response of Jesus was for a testimony of truth. That truth is still the hope, purpose and plan of every pastor, believer and pope if there is any hope for this proclamation. Also note that this same Peter is the one who stood quickly against the word in verses 21-22 that our salvation was to come by a death! (The words “get behind me satan” come to mind there.) I acknowledge that this same Peter preached the first and still the greatest sermon call to faith with the help of the Firey Spirit in Acts. 2. (OH this will get me in trouble!) Did you ever note that Peter was not in charge of the first recorded church council in Acts 15? It was James whom I assume was the brother of Jesus and the author of James in the New Testament. Would that not make him the first sorta Pope? Maybe the point is to point to our Savior without doubt or fear when confused or otherwise.
