Deuteronomy 7:6-9 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. 7 The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8 But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.
Israel has just been challenged to destroy Canaan totally. The alternative to Israel being special and chosen was for the Canaanites to be destroyed. This is the painful picture of God that I hurt for. Do we reject the Chinese or Arabs because we see ourselves as more prepared for God? Is this a call for pride? Ouch. Go to the purpose of Israel: To learn Yahweh that the world would know His claim on all peoples. The world has already failed {once, twice ??} to come close to God and now He is preparing His people to carry His call, holiness and desire for fellowship to the world so that when His covenant of love is fully revealed we may respond in faith. You are the message is the challenge. You are loved for the sake of all the world. This challenge still is over all of us by the Lord God! Not to destroy, but to be prepared for a witness and the revelation of Jesus.
