To See It

Deuteronomy 34:1 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the LORD showed him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan, 2 all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea, 3 the Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. 4 Then the LORD said to him, "This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, 'I will give it to your descendants.' I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it." 5 And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had said.

The whole trip was to get the people to the promised land. Yes, it included a solid set of practices to remember who the Lord was. Yes, it took 40 years to train up a people who might actually look to the Lord in their efforts. Yes, it stretched far and wide and separated the tribes even as they traveled together, but separately to the new land. And yes, Moses was tasked with getting them led out, led through and held together in trials and threats from peoples who would reject them. And those people would actually move into that land after all he had been used for, but not led by him! From a distance Moses would see with God’s vision the land for all the people that He would not walk even a mile in. One day he would stand with the Savior on a mountain. The complete work of God will not be completed in our lives, but we will see the glimpse of the lives, the places and the struggles all will face in hope. Is our distance too far or can we live with peace in the promises we see only too distant?
