In season 5 of “The Chosen” Jesus attacks the buyers and sellers before the temple with the whip in an action that seemed quite out of character for some of the gentle loving person he was shown to be. Matthew 23 is a passage of attack on the institutions of power, failure and pride that can grow in religious life. Having never made a burnt offering, I do know that is a good thing to give my gifts quietly without dealing with entrance into worship, just to keep from thinking I can buy my way in or earn something. At the same time, it is no worship at all that does not deal with my value of self in relation to my Lord. Before I go to spend time with the Lord consciously, it is good to clear my values up with what I think of myself, my work and my value.
