Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ
Matthew 5:43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
First of all, remember that this is part of the message that starts with “Blessed are…”. The “you” that are addressed are those who are told they are blessed by God and when the blessing is accepted, the words are for them, not as people searching for the Love of God, but those who have tasted it and received it. So the command, direction to love your enemies is to desire them to receive the same blessings offered to all from the Lord who dies for them and rises to proclaim victory over sin and death. To offer death to the evil is to undo the work of our Savior. To offer love is to affirm His victory. It is to join in the rising of the sun and the pouring of the rain on all. For the record, I need to remember often that I (and you) are children of our Father in Heaven and I like to carry on the family tradition!
