Israel is Jacob, the second born child of Isaac, who owned the promise of Abraham’s line and Ephriam is the child of Joseph the second born of Asenath, the Egyptian wife. This memory lesson shows that the Lord calls whom He will, not whom the traditions may seem to favor. But the promise of The Lord is still the issue. Jacob returned from a form of exile and Joseph was returned after some 400 years of his hand on the people who were of Jacob. When the Lord saves, renews and returns us, we need to know that it is not always the way we expect, but by His hand and His love, even with weeping and prayers of need. His hand on the family will be there, even in the mixed nature of the family of God today who claim Jesus. Not what we expect, but what He does: even weeping near the waters of hope. The Family returns.
