Dead To Self

John 15:12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.

Though it has been close, I have to admit that I have not been a part of a real group or congregation where the clear obvious goal is to give all for the sake of others. The limited goals may be witness, healing, renewal or whatever, but in the end, each portion of the group seems to end up being a set of goals, “salvations” or such that we end up noting and even claiming. For example: the Bible Camp ended up with 13 baptisms and three joining the mission trip to Haiti. Both of these goals are great, but were they laying down the worker’s lives for those affected? Yes and no. I would guess that in truth, the purposes were ideal in that direction, but in truth, the accomplishments were for those who did the work. It is near impossible not to hang on to our lives in the efforts to love as Jesus did. Before we congratulate ourselves in any project, ask “did I really give it for those who were to be blessed?”
