Matthew 10:39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.
This says pretty clearly that losing my life for Him, will actually reveal the life I am to live. This does not mean dropping out of school, quitting my job or some such – but it does mean that there can be a great deal of effort towards something that really is not His purpose in the end for me. I may get a doctorate somewhere, but the real work He has is to fight a battle for a community of mixed financial levels to live together. (From what I have seen, that is beyond a doctorate.) Our gifts and abilities do need to be developed (remember Paul was trained by Gamaliel), but the great use of that training was to be His call. We need and are called to lose our lives in His to find the reality of our living.
