Deuteronomy 8:3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
When Satan attacked Jesus, this was the passage that Jesus tossed back at Satan. But it was not just a quotation. It was a statement of a much deeper truth: we need food, water and even shelter, but above all of this we need to experience not just words from the Lord, but the evidence of His being. No, not evidence, but the hand, action, presence and experience of The Father. The top of that evidence is the person, actions and life/resurrection of Jesus who is God among us. For the exodus, the evidence was fire at night, cloud by day, food as needed and still they did not trust. When The Lord goes beyond a quote, we have heard the Word.
