Matthew 1:1 This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:
There is one clear reason why the genealogy of Joseph the carpenter from Nazareth was mentioned at all: the Jewish tradition would not be kind to a Messiah born without a father’s lineage. In both cases David was in the middle (Luke and Mathew). Abraham too. But Mary was the direct connection for Luke for whom the woman was the clear line of birth. Joseph was there, but not the true father. His call as an adoptive father was a good one, but not the same as Mary. He was the one that the Jewish people would first accept. The purpose of this genealogy was to point clearly to the Messiah, son of David and not to argue either way against the virgin birth. His birth story in Matthew is about a virgin bearing Jesus. This genealogy is for the lineage of the father who raised him. Be at peace about the distinction. It is for the Jews.
