One Flesh

Ephesians 5:31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.

St. Paul sure took the complexities of marriage and the one flesh part and jumped (or did he?) to The Lord and the church. I have noted that the church has fallen into many groups, ideas, standards and so have marriages. Is it not a horror to see what we have done with what should be the great gifts of our living. Marriage has become, for many, centered on the sexual satisfaction instead of part of our gifts of security and hope for family. The church has become centered on “how I feel” instead of the gifts of reaching the community and world with the hope of life in fellowship with Our Lord. When the goals of the fellowship in either case are the larger family or gathering, we are more likely to survive the challenges of different ideas or desires that are part of a creation that is diverse in interests. This does not mean that the family should affirm serious destructive behaviors or the church should affirm such either. But the goals of both should be a unity based on the gifts Our Lord has offered us that are not about us, but each other.
