When The Truth Hurts….

Genesis 3:4 "You will not certainly die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

“You keep going this way and it will be bad for you!” I am pretty sure that a number of my friends in the Texas prison system have heard some version of this truth. A large number of families have fallen apart because of some “you shouldn’t do that” that was ignored. The lie for the serpent -Satan- was the “like God” portion. Their eyes were opened. They did know good from evil and it tasted good. But the truth they were no longer any close to being like God. They were weakened in the world, lost in direction and fearful of the future. There was and remains a promise of hope. For those in the prisons of our land and those in the prisons of our culture. He is still God, Lord and Master. And He is for us, not against us. The hope is not in us, nor the fruit of a tree, but in the reality of the risen Savior who will move the angel from the tree and give us new life in His presence. Amen.
