Numbers 3:45-48 "Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites are to be mine. I am the LORD. To redeem the 273 firstborn Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites, collect five shekels for each one, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs. Give the money for the redemption of the additional Israelites to Aaron and his sons."

For your and my math, read Numbers 3:40 to 3:48 and do the math. There were 22,000 Levite males – all of them. There were 22,273 first born male children one month or older of the other tribes. (Note that many families would have more boys than just the first born.) The other tribes were to be responsible for the security and care of the Levites with their focus on the worship and practices of the whole nation. This was a tax – call it what it was as a nationwide requirement – on the whole nation. For our time, we do not tax from the body of Christ, but we do ask that we care for each other and that does include our servants called to separate service for the Lord though all of us are to serve. All of Israel was called to serve the Lord also. I am not a math tither, but I know that God has put servants around us who are dependent on His people to provide their needs. Now, do your math.
